Time Capsule: Lil Peep

This week's Columbia House Party looks back at Lil Peep's 2017 debut album, 'Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1'. Listen to hosts Blake Murphy and Jake Goldsbie, along with special guest Sasha Kaira discuss the impact and the tragedy surrounding Lil Peep's short career.

Although his time with us was short, Lil Peep managed to cement himself as a generational voice to millions across the globe. Fans connected with his deeply personal lyrics, heart-wrenching vocal melodies, and his ability to blend and traverse genres. In today's time capsule, we look back on Lil Peep's rapid evolution from soundcloud rapper to icon.

Born Gustav Ahr, Lil Peep was the son of two students who met at Harvard in the late 90's. Raised in Long Island primarily by his mother, Peep is remembered as a bright and inquisitive child who suffered with anxiety, traits that would grow to be present in his music.

Rocking an impressive beard for a teenager, this photo of Lil Peep with his childhood dog Taz is a reminder of the lighter, goofier side of the artist.

Looking like Leonardo DiCaprio circa his Romeo & Juliet days, this photo is an example of the disheveled, off-kilter brand of sex symbol that Lil Peep became.

This photo captures everything that made Lil Peep such an icon. With his ability to combine punk rock and high fashion, and the charismatic smile that shines to hide the pained eyes, Peep was a complex, empathetic figure.

When all is said and done, the ultimate measure of an artist is how well they connected to their audience, and Lil Peep's enduring legacy proves that he shared a deep bond with his fans. His blending of hip-hop and emo, his magnetic presence, and the reliability of his lyrics brought fans together, and created a space where people from all walks of life could share in the music.
